Christmas Buying Guide - Collection VI

We have jigsaw puzzles.

The neat thing about putting puzzles together as a family activity is that, unlike playing games, there are no winners or losers.

Puzzles sell like crazy this time of year, so I'll have three puzzle collections.

Today we'll have animal puzzles:

We have puzzles with cute cats and kittens

and puzzles with handsome horses

as well as puzzles with adorable bunnies

and elephants

and, of course, dogs of every description

We also have puzzles with sheep, cows, pigs, weasels, foxes, fish, hippopotamuseses, birds, and two or three more categories of critter.

Go here and in the 'search this store' box, enter the name of the animal you want to see: dog, cat, horse, etc. etc. etc.:

 Cinema Paradiso

Towards the end of the movie a girl sitting in front of us sighed, 'Oh, Alfredo...'

That became a catchphrase for my friend and I for years to come.

The Tuesday Song of the Week

 Something screamingly awesomely 1980s...

'Just Like Heaven' - The Cure

The first time I heard The Cure was about 30 years ago, in a car driven by a friend. We were on our way up to New York to hang out with a friend of his, this fascinating girl who'd been a celebrity publicist back in the 1970s.  She had stories galore:

-Sophia Loren is one of the world's loveliest people.  And when she sits with her legs crossed, she holds the upper leg a fraction of an inch above the lower so that any fat doesn't get looking squashed.  Not an easy trick.

-Betty White is a doll.  And has a great figure.  A magnet for men of a certain age, i.e. whatever age Betty is.

-Bill Cosby is an arrogant creep.

-If a celebrity claims that they're finally clean and sober, don't you believe it.

Christmas Buying Guide - Collection IV

Let's get started!

first up we have these very neato 1950s Renwal boats

The one one the left is a tugboat, the one on the right a ferry boat

At 4.25" from bow to stern, the ferryboat is the larger of the two.

The tugboat is .25" smaller.

Both have wheels on their undersides for efficient and effective sailing over your floor.

Next we have something useful,

in poodle form

Our golden poodle friend can be used to hold little candies, little jewels, little coins, etc

He's 4-3/8" tall.

=====================================================================

Kitty Cucumber is in the house!

Although it's actually Kitty Cuke's friend J. P Buster

That whatsis he's holding?
It's mistletoe, likely for kissing purposes.

J. P. stands 3.5" tall, and is as handsome a cat as you could possibly desire.

==================================================================

We be having bakelite!

Always a welcome find in someone's stocking!

And if it'll be three stockings you're stuffing, you could put one in each stocking.

The Star Made Me Buy It

 Today's star is Joe E. Brown for Calox Tooth Powder

Basically, he was famous for his ginormous mouth, but he was also pretty funny.  I've seen a bunch of movies featuring the big comedians of the late 1920s/early 30s, and didn't laugh once.  TCM was running one of Brown's movies, and I thought I'd take a look, secure in the knowledge that this was yet another old timey comedian whose humor was bo outdated.

I forget the title of the movie, but I actually did think it was very funny.

BTW, when did they get rid of powdered 'dentrifices' ????

Christmas Buying Guide - Collection II

Today's collection made up of one-of-a-kind items from my Etsy store:

 Each and every one a marvel of marvelousness.

To wit:

the carved stone bird with another bird in its belly

I had a heck of a time getting a pic of the bird in the bird.  This is the best I could do:
Honest, it's really a bird in there.

BTW, this whole thing looks sooooooooo much better in person.

======================================================================

While our bird in bird has tons of personality, this neat item has even more!

Art deco at its art deco-est!! SOLD

note that the white spots on his face are just glare from my camera.

======================================================================

Next we have a BEAUTIFUL box, with a super neat painting under glass on the lid.  SOLD

 (the photo above is a bit washed out.  The actual image looks infinitely better.)

The sides are also hand-painted, and also under glass

and there's a mirror inside
======================================================================

The next two are amazing examples of the woodcarver's ingenuity:

A very appealing wall box

which can also be an equally appealing wall plaque

Push down those side rails at the top, and the piece becomes completely flat.

BTW, how cute is that little owl????

Very, I'd say.

=====================================================================

Last, but miles away from least is probably the coolest thing I've found all year

It's both a VERY large carving of a boxer dog, AND a place where you can hide the hooch.

 or just forget the hooch entirely, and just enjoy him for the handsome guy he is.

=============================================================================

That's it for today.

There'll be five more tomorrow.

Until then, see more, get more here:

There are patterns

In my sewing pattern shop!

A few months back, I was the lucky recipient of a whole box of patterns, 50 or so, most of which were uncut.

As you saw with the Dynasty patterns, which came from elsewhere, and all four of which are uncut.

Whoo hoo!

OK, now see some more.  Note that the sizes shown are VINTAGE sizes.  They translate either to a contemporary size 4 or size 0/2:

A non-embarrassing maternity pattern.

Back in the day, a lot of maternity fashions looked like clown clothes, or strange styles that made the woman looked like an oversized, over-age baby.

The version above wear the woman is wearing matching top and pants could be worn today, and be perfectly stylish, and attractive.

This pattern's not uncut, but like all the patterns in my shop, it's complete and in good usable condition.

=====================================================================

This one's really neat, because it makes pretty much everything I wore in high school.

I recall having had a jumpsuit, which a) never quite fit right because I have a long torso, and b) the buttons were always falling off of it.  Literally, not a week would go by that I didn't have to sewn back on a button or three.  That was my very last jumpsuit.

This pattern is also not uncut, but perfectly complete and usable.

======================================================================

I wish I knew how to sew, and I wish I was a size 4, because I would be all over this pattern.

I'm also long-waisted, so it's really hard for me to find a dress where the waist doesn't fall four inches above my actual waist.  If I'd lived in the 1940s - The Golden Age of Short-Waisted Dresses - I'd probably have had to go around dressed in a very large paper sack.

 ======================================================================

This one's uncut, and in three sizes, which translate approximately to contemporary sizes 8 through 12.

I love the look on the left.  The look on the right reminds me of what gals in the human resources department would wear.

=======================================================================

Another uncut pattern, and we're back to contemporary size 4.

This is the only pattern in my shop - or was ever in my shop - that's recommended/required for knits.

Personally, I hate knits, and if I scored a huge haul of patterns, the ones for knits always ended up in my recycling bin.  But I thought what this pattern makes to be not too offensive to my sensibilities.
=======================================================================

That's it for today.  More coming soon.
