July's Fourth Haul of Antiques and Untiques

Our latest collection of thoroughly awesome awesomeness, AND...

of course, there's more coming.

Here we go!

We be having BRONZE!

Only wish I could have gotten a better picture of this beauty. Alas, the minute I take the camera outside, humidity fogs up the lens.

========================================================================

1960s pens scented with Arpege and Chanel No. 5, AND with 14k gold filigree on the barrels. SOLD

I googled these, and every pair I found online had the same problem these pens have, i.e. they need the ink holder thingie replaced.  The upside, they still smell nice.  And the gold.

=======================================================================

 Somewhat later in the 1960s/early 70s   SOLD

free-form blue milk glass vase.

This is another sub-par photo.  The blue is much brighter in person than what you see here.

=======================================================================

English bone china is in the house!

cup, saucer, cake plate.  (Or sandwich plate, but I prefer cake.  Thanks.)

=======================================================================

       Now here's something super-special:   SOLD

pink and white slag glass toothpick holder

========================================================================

      Let's take a trip!   SOLD

to Alaska in the 1950s !!!

So fun!!!

=====================================================================

That's all for today.

July's - and earlier - ties

You may be wondering why I don't post ties anymore.

One simple reason, to wit, some complete and total nitwit at Zazzle had the idea to turn this:

to this:

Not to be vulgar, but WTF????

The alternative is nearly as bad:

Does the above give you a good look at the print?

No it does not.

For EVERY tie on Zazzle, the alternatives are the rolled version, the blurry-ish full version, or the blurry-ish full version being worn by some dude.

I'm guessing the number of neckties being sold on Zazzle has plummeted.

I complained, but all I got was 'We'll pass your comment along.'

The Star Made Me Buy It

Today's star is Lionel Hampton, from a 1953 ad for Manischewitz wine...

These skinny ads are hard to deal with.

I've always confused Lionel Hampton with Count Basie.  When I was a kid, I remember one or the other would occasionally turn up on Merv Griffin or The Dinah Shore Show*, and The Mike Douglas Show.

Dinah would come on around 4:00 in the afternoon - this was her talk show, not the show she had in the 1950s, long before I was born.  One of my little friends and I would play this hilarious game.  Every day, she started her show with a song, and we would wait until the very last second before the very first word came out of her mouth to change the channel.  It was both fun and challenging. The key was to change the channel at that exact second.  No sooner, no later.

Not that we had anything against Dinah.  As an uncle of mine remembered, she was a 'sweet gal.'  The uncle in question - who was really my father's cousin - not an uncle exactly, was a commercial pilot, and on one of his flights was Dinah, who during the flight busied herself in the plane's little kitchen, whipping up something yummy for the four or five other passengers.

Mug of the Month

It's now July, and July is all about the seashore, and the beach and that.

I know this because I live downashore in Cape May County.

Which brings us to an image that began life around 1910 on the boardwalk in Atlantic City.  (AC is in Atlantic County.  Just thought you'd wanna know.)

Hand-colored by yours truly.

And on a mug.

Believe it or not, their attire would have been worn on the beach, and in the ocean.

Even the shoes.
