The Star Made Me Buy It

Today's TSMMBI is quite a unique one,

in that the star was found in a 1938 Sears catalog in my possession,

before she was a star !!

 To wit,

Susan Hayward modeling hats

She's the gal on the left.

The catalog also has a picture of her modeling another hat - I'm seen that particular pic tons of times in books about old movies.

Her real name was Edythe Marrener.  I think that sounds more moviestar-ey than 'Susan Hayward.'

Her last performance was a TV movie called Say Goodbye, Maggie Cole

I remember back then that nary a show or TV movie was without a character named Maggie.

I'd love to know what exactly drove that.

The Tuesday Song of the Week

A GREAT song,

A song that was ALL OVER the radio back in the day,

that the oldies stations NEVER play...

'My Maria' - B.W. Stevenson

I just found out today that his version of 'Shabala' was the original, and the Three Dog Night version is a cover.

I was sure it was the other way around.

Bag o' the Day

Today's bag is a beauty.

SUPER colorful,

kinda fun,

and neato for the fan of

sailboats,

old-timey advertising !

The Star Made Me Buy It

 Today's star is one of my all-time faves...

Dana Andrews for Stetson Hats

I watch The Best Years of Our Lives whenever it comes on.  Same with Laura.

And same with Curse of the Demon, which is a much more intelligent movie than the title suggests.

Tuesday Song of the Week

Sometimes I'll hear an oldie on the radio - something I haven't heard in awhile - and I'll marvel at how really awesome that song was.

Heard this one a few days ago.

REALLY awesome.

 'Spirit in the Sky' - Norman Greenbaum

Bag of the Day

Today's bag would make a hoot of a gift for the scrapbook artist - perfect for carrying supplies to those crop get-togethers.

An equally neato present for anybody who does scherenschnitte.

And also those gals who enjoy a fun tote bag:

Note that this looks WAAYYY sharper - ha ha, I made a funny - in person.  Really, not the sort of blurry-ish image you see above.

newest additions to my collection of advertising ashtrays

Found three this past Thursday,

plus three more I got long ago, and never photographed.

Wanna see?

The Berwick Bank

From Berwick, PA.  When I googled this for more info, what popped up was a UK windfarm.

=======================================================================

Joseph F. Malatesta Plumbing & Heating - Vineland, NJ

not googleable

=======================================================================

St. Francis bingo - Vineland, NJ

Fifteen years or so ago, this church merged with Immaculate Heart of Mary - the ensuing church is now called Divine Mercy Parish.  Not sure if they do bingo.

=====================================================================

Fred Renner's Bar - Penns Grove, NJ

When I googled this what came up was a Fred Renner, Jr. who was a wrestling coach at Penns Grove High School.  He passed in 2021, and his obituary did not mention him owning a bar. Maybe the bar belonged to Fred Renner, Sr.

 Whisky à Go Go

World-famous and STILL in business !!

======================================================================

W. M. Fishpaw - Mobil Farm Products and Mobilheat, Fleetwood, PA

Having seen the movie Polyester, whose lead character is named 'Francine Fishpaw,' I thought Fishpaw was a ha ha name that John Waters came up with.

Alas, W. M. Fishpaw of Fleetwood, PA is not googleable.
