William Bendix for Chesterfield cigarettes
Back in the day, there was a lot of work for actors who could convincingly play working-class shlubs. Bendix was one. Others that match this description were Ernest Borgnine, Lionel Stander, and George Tobias. I could probably come up with several more if I tried.
The only thing I remember seeing William Bendix in was some movie about him being a criminal or something similar, and then he becomes a monk in some religious order that has a rule of silence. Wish I remembered the title.
