Thus ends today's Lucky Dip.

More next week !!!

Latest additions to my advertising ashtrays collection

 It's always nice to find multiple ashtrays at the same place at the same time.

These came from an estate sale that's been ongoing, i.e. the estate has TONS TONS TONS of stuff, and so the estate sale has been held every couple weeks since early September.

I've come to every one of them, and got at least something.

These came from last week's estate sale:

                                                       Pudding Stone Inn - Boonton, NJ

This place must have closed a long time ago.  If you google it the only thing that pops up is people selling postcards depicting it.

=======================================================================

                                                   The Crillon - Atlantic City, NJ

                                                       'Modern' AND 'Fireproof.' !!!

There's zero info on the 'net about The Crillon. In you google it, what pops up is The Claridge Hotel, which is also on Indiana Avenue.

There's also somebody on eBay selling a matchbook advertising The Crillon.

======================================================================

 Now here's something special:

                                  'Rod Keller, Host to Most of New Jersey Welcomes You.'

The only ashtray I've ever found that advertised FOUR places.

 - Ranch House, Convent Station, NJ.

   According to the 'net, the full name of this (defunct) place was named 'Rod's 1890s Ranch House.'

- Rod's, West Orange, NJ

  Another defunct restaurant, but at least I found some info about it, and Rod himself. To wit:

  "Gerard "Rod' Keller, also known as GK, opened the original "Rod's" in West Orange in 1936 with just $500 "

 - The Acres

    Also defunct, but at least we got a photo:

- Shadowbrook, Shrewsbury, NJ

  Still in business!  It's now a wedding venue called 'Shadowbrook at Shrewsbury.' So classy   like.

 ---------------------------------

I wish I could find more information about Rod Keller, but came up empty when I googled his name.

==============================================================

That's it for today.  Hopefully, I'll find more on my travels.

fun stuff

I was poking through my tin which holds all my old movie stubs, and found this relic of my college years...

                                                Pennsylvania Space-Tion token

Pennsylvania Space-Tion was a pinball arcade on College Avenue (at least I think it was on College Avenue) in State College, home of Penn State's main campus.

I spent a LOT of time there shooting pinball.

The Star Made Me Buy It

Today's star is pretty much forgotten, but you've seen him in action if you've ever seen the Marx Brother's film's A Night at the Opera and A Day at the Races. He played the male love interest in each.

                                     Allan Jones for French's Worcestershire Sauce

Allan Jones was the father of Jack Jones, famous for singing lotsa early 1960s pop songs, like 'Wives and Lovers,' and 'Lollipops and Roses.'  Jack also sang the Love Boat theme.

See Allan and Jack on this clip from The Love Boat:

Lucky Dip

So sorry this has taken soooo long, but I've been soooo busy. Plus my Fridays - Lucky Dip was originally a Friday thing - have gotten all kinda crazy.

Nevertheless, on to the you came for.

Today's collection is Victorian womanhood:

 It's time - get it - 'time' (ha ha) to see some maahvelous Victorian/Edwardian ladies and a goofy gent wearing pink socks marking time for you.

                       A VERY impressive addition to your cigar lounge decor, no? (Yes.)

It's interesting that advertisers used pretty ladies to advertise tobacco back when it was considered very bad form for a woman to smoke.

When automobiles became a thing, a lot of the advertising for that included pretty ladies, although at the time - and for some time to come - nearly all driving was done by men.

Anyhoo, get that very fabulous tapestry here: www.zazzle.com/1890s_old_virginia_cheroots_ad_tapestry-256382602897298054

              A stock character in Victorian theatre was the sharp-tongued dowager/old maid.

Found in one of the Victorian books I got at the Goodwill Outlet (see my August 18 post).  The print is titled 'The Model.'

She's shown here on a throw blanket.  Something VERY neato for the Victorian decor!
