I get an email from the Smithsonian just about everyday, with all kinds of neato stories about history and science and that.

 Today one came in that including an article about some of the snapshots in the Library of Congress that are on exhibition in a museum in California.  

 One of the ones depicted on the Smithsonian site is this one, from 1936:
Just thought you'd get a kick out of it.  I did.

Fantastically wonderful vintage costume jewelry, to be specific.
Super-neato bakelite brooch

exquisite baroque pearls and rhinestones brooch
 That big rhinestone in the center is blindingly sparkly.

I love me some reversed carved lucite brooch

maybe bakelite, maybe fakelite
 It failed the 409 test, but sorta passed the hot water test in that it smelled kinda chemical, but not overwhelmingly so.

Nevertheless, something neato and appealing from the Great Depression

Another curiousity.  A VERY sparkly curiosity
 As in, is it a Juliana brooch or not?

I'm not a Judy Garland fan per sé, but I think her story is interesting. (Like that of a gazillion other old-time stars, books about whom I've eagerly devoured)  A few years ago, I read a paperback version of the above book, and COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.  It includes oodles of insights that you won't find in other Judy Garland books.

Dug out of a box of ephemera, I found a program for Overbrook High School's 1939 commencement dealie.

 On the back is a list of the members of the Philadelphia Board of Education. At least EIGHT of these guys went on to have schools named after them:
