April 2024's First Haul of Antiques and Untiques

We haven't had a haul for you in over two months!

Didn't realize it was that long, but it was.

Mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

Soooo, here's what we got:

SUPER neato cast iron napkin holder/letter holder

Note that the color is BLACK, and not the light-ish charcoal-ish color it appears to be in the photo.  It's "black black black like Othello," which is a line from I Am a Camera, a play I was in back in 1999 at Magnet Theater Company in Trenton, NJ.  (It ain't there no more).

In addition to playing one of the characters, I taught the actors playing the German characters the German accent, since I've taken tons of German classes.

And actually made a TON of money doing the accent in an industrial film a few years later.

Wanna pronounce it like a German would? "Bleck bleck bleck like Otello.'

======================================================================

1940s Fostoria 'Romance' pattern candelabras

I could see these on a movie set circa 1947.

Some movie about rich women suffering in mink.

======================================================================

Here's something REALLY fun, to wit: tins/jars from 1910-1940, most of which are still full!

 Winner take ALL !!

========================================================================

chased metal and cobalt glass jars

The Star Made Me Buy It

Today's star is Dorothy Lamour.

Again.

We had her a couple of years ago, where she was in an ad for Calox tooth powder.

Here she is in another ad for Calox tooth powder, from 1944:

I remember seeing a teensy bit of one of her Road movies, very early one Saturday morning, when I was about age 9.

And all I remember of that is Bob Hope spitting out the line, "Josh! Oh, gosh!!"

Later in her career, she appeared in Donovan's Reef, which is John Ford at his most tiresome and predictable.  Nevertheless, it's kind of entertaining because of the cast, which includes Cesar Romero, who is ALWAYS fun to watch.

The Tuesday Song of the Week

As promised from our last TSotW, today's TSotW is another cat-oriented tune, heard during a two-hour block of cat songs heard on World Cafe a couple weeks ago.

So...

'Plea from a Cat Named Virtue' - The Weakerthans

Speaking of cat songs, ever since I've had cats, I've made up songs for all my cats, including multiple songs per cat.

Some lyrics:

for Bunny, a thoroughly adorable little tabby I had years ago.

"Bunnnny cat, my baby bunnnny cat,

she's such a honeyyyyy cat,

a honey cat,

she's my sweet bunnny cat,

my bunny cat.

She's just all that.

She's such a babyyyyyy cat,

a precious babyyyyy cat,

she's my sweet baby cat,

and she's all that,

a baby cat.

She's a darrrrling girl,

she makes me twist and twirl

she's my darrrling girl

my darling girl,

my baby cat.'

It goes on from there with another five stanzas or so.  It has the same tune to a well-known song, alas I can't remember the title.

Tuesday Song of the Week

Wow, it's nearly two months since our last TSotW.

But the wait was worth it!

Today's fun TSotW...

                                                    'Facts About Cats' - TIMBUK3

I first heard this a couple weeks ago on World Cafe, during a two-hour block of songs about cats plus a tune or three from Cat Stevens.

One of the other songs from that will be next week's TSotW.

Speaking of cats, as I type this - and for the last half hour - the World's Cutest Cat has been crawling all over me, and making it somewhat difficult for me to get this done.

                                                                     Starlin

The Star Made Me Buy It

Today's star is the long-forgotten Diana Lynn in an ad for Royal Crown Cola:

She was part of a clump of pert brunettes from the late 1940s and '50s - Debra Paget, Joanne Dru, Karen Sharpe, Audrey Dalton, Dianne Foster  - who played love interests, or second female leads in tons of B movies of the time.

Most ended up guest-starring on tons of TV shows in the 1960s and '70s.

Ms. Lynn had more talent than most, having been a piano prodigy who began taking lessons at age 4.

Sadly she passed at the young age of 45 due to a stroke.

The Star Made Me Buy It

Today's star is Joan Bennett for French's bird seed:

The add is from 1943 or maybe 1944, and the film mentioned - Once Off Guard - had its title changed to The Woman in the Window.  Once Off Guard was the title of the novel the movie was based on.

I have only one Joan Bennett memory: I think I saw her once on the Mike Douglas Show.

According to Wikipedia, she appeared on Mike Douglas five times.

The Mike Douglas show was taped in Philadelphia, and I knew lotsa people who got tickets for the show.  I'll never get why it never occurred to my mother to get tickets.  They were, after all, free, and she would sign up for ANYTHING that was free.

Speaking of birds and bird seed, I would love to have a pet bird, but my hubbage, being a pet nazi probably wouldn't agree.  But I frequently put bread, and other things wildlife likes out in the backyard for whoever - fur or feather - my be interested in partaking.

In the last year, I've gotten two cans of what turned out to be VERY disappointing party peanuts.

How can anybody screw up party peanuts???

So the horrible peanuts I got from Aldi ended up in the backyard. Within five minutes there were five blue jays feasting on them.

A month ago, I got a container of party peanuts from another store, and they too were inedible.  This was a big container - two pounds at least - and again, the moment I left them out a whole pack of blue jays arrived.

I rarely see blue jays any other time, so I wish I knew what marvelous part of their inner wiring can pick up the scent of party peanuts miles away.

Fun stuff

I was googling my name the other day - as you do - and what popped up was this...

That's a shot from when I was on Jeopardy!

I came in second.  At that time, second and third place players got a prize, unlike today, when second place gets $3,000, and third gets $2,000.  My prize was a week-long trip for two to San Francisco.  The prize, however, did not include airfare.

Until it did.  I was contacted a week or two after my appearance, and told that my airfare would be included.

I'm guessing this is what happened: I'm sure they review the tape of every episode, and it's likely that a question I was told I got wrong I actually got right.  And they have TONS of money, so giving me airfare was probably no big deal for them.
